I get some version of the same call almost every month. A founder just moved their company to Austin — or they’ve been here for years and finally have the budget to invest in PR… and they Google “best PR agency in Austin,” scroll through ten nearly identical homepages, and end up more confused than when they started.
So let’s cut through it. I’ve been on both sides of this conversation — as a journalist deciding which local pitches were worth covering, and now as the founder of an Austin-based agency that gets those pitches placed. Here’s what actually matters when you’re hiring a PR agency in this city, and what most of the directory listings won’t tell you.
Austin’s PR market isn’t like other markets
If you’ve hired PR in New York, Chicago, or the Bay Area before, Austin is going to feel different — and not just because the coffee is better.
This city runs on a strange mix of old-school Texas business relationships and fast-moving startup energy. You’ve got SXSW bringing global media attention once a year, a genuinely competitive local tech press corps (Austin Business Journal, Austin American-Statesman, Built In Austin, plus the national reporters who fly in and out covering the “Silicon Hills” story), and a startup and funded-company scene that’s grown fast enough that not every PR agency in town has actually kept pace with it.
A lot of Austin PR agencies were built for local retail, real estate, or hospitality clients — which is a completely different skill set than pitching a Series A health tech founder to TechCrunch or landing a fintech CEO on Bloomberg. When you’re evaluating a PR agency in Austin, the first question isn’t “are they local.” It’s “are they local AND do they actually understand the kind of company you’re building.”
What to actually look for in an Austin PR agency
1. Real relationships with Austin media — not just a media list
Every agency will tell you they “have relationships with local press.” Ask them to name the specific Austin Business Journal reporter covering your industry, or the Statesman business desk editor they’ve pitched in the last month. If you get a vague answer, that’s your answer.
Austin’s media scene is smaller and tighter than people expect for a city this size. The agencies who are actually plugged in know the reporters by name, know what they’re working on, and know which stories they’ve already turned down this quarter.
2. National reach, not just local coverage
Here’s the mistake I see founders make constantly: they hire a “local Austin PR agency” assuming that means local-only thinking, and they end up with a portfolio of Austin Business Journal mentions and nothing else. If you’re a funded startup or growth-stage company, you need an Austin-based team that can also land you in Forbes, TechCrunch, Bloomberg, and the trade press specific to your industry — not just hometown coverage.
The best Austin PR agencies operate like a national firm that happens to be headquartered here, not a hyper-local shop that only knows the Austin market.
3. Senior-level strategy, not a junior account team
This one isn’t specific to Austin, but it matters here as much as anywhere. Austin’s startup scene has grown so fast that a lot of agencies scaled up their headcount by hiring junior staff faster than they built out senior leadership. You end up paying premium Austin agency rates for account management handled by someone who’s been out of college for a year.
Before you sign, ask directly: who is on my account, and how senior are they? If the agency can’t give you a clear, specific answer, keep looking.
4. An understanding of the Austin startup and funding ecosystem
Whether it’s Capital Factory, the University of Texas startup pipeline, or the wave of companies relocating from California, Austin has a specific funding and growth culture. A PR agency that’s actually embedded in this ecosystem — going to the events, knowing the VCs, understanding the difference between a seed-stage narrative and a Series B narrative — is going to build a stronger story than one that’s just renting office space here.
5. Awards and recognition that are actually earned
A lot of “best PR agency in Austin” lists are pay-to-play — an agency submits itself, pays a fee, and gets a badge for their homepage. It’s worth asking how an agency’s awards were actually judged. Awards judged by working journalists (rather than marketing committees or paid submission panels) carry real weight, because journalists are the actual audience an agency is supposed to be able to reach.
Industries Austin PR agencies should actually understand
If you’re hiring PR in Austin, your industry matters more than people assume. A few sectors where the city has real depth — and where you should expect your agency to already speak the language:
- Health tech and digital health — Austin has become a genuine hub here, and the media covering it (from trade press to national health tech reporters) expects agencies to understand FDA nuance, not just general startup positioning.
- Fintech — a growing cluster, with its own specific trade press and investor narrative expectations.
- Consumer tech and DTC brands — Austin’s consumer scene is strong, and lifestyle press here moves fast.
- B2B SaaS — the backbone of a huge chunk of the Austin tech economy, with its own analyst and trade publication ecosystem.
- Climate tech and energy — with Texas’s energy industry roots colliding with newer climate-focused startups, this is a growing and increasingly sophisticated beat.
If an agency’s portfolio is entirely restaurants and real estate, that’s not necessarily a red flag on its own — but it does mean you should ask harder questions if your company falls into one of the categories above.
The questions to ask before you sign with any Austin PR agency
- Who specifically handles my account, and what’s their seniority level?
- Can you name three Austin reporters and three national reporters you’d pitch for a story like mine?
- What’s a recent Austin-based client win, and what publication ran it?
- How do you measure success beyond “media impressions”?
- What does your onboarding and first 90 days actually look like?
If an agency hesitates on any of these, that tells you something. If they answer with specifics — names, outlets, real outcomes — that’s the signal you’re looking for.
Why we built Disrupt PR in Austin
We didn’t end up in Austin by accident. This is a city that rewards agencies who actually show up — to the events, to the relationships, to the reporters who are building their careers here the same way the founders we work with are building their companies. Being based in Austin means we’re in the room, not dialing in from somewhere else pretending to understand the market.
We’re proud to have been named the #1 Boutique PR Agency in the country at the 2025 Bulldog PR Awards — the only PR awards program judged exclusively by working journalists, not marketing panels. That distinction matters more here than a hometown trophy would, because it’s judged by the exact audience an agency is supposed to be able to reach.
Founded by a former Emmy-nominated broadcast journalist, our team works with growth-stage companies, funded startups, and established brands across health tech, fintech, consumer, and B2B SaaS — landing coverage in outlets from the Austin Business Journal to The New York Times, Forbes, Bloomberg, and Good Morning America.
The honest bottom line
“Best PR agency in Austin” isn’t really a single answer! It really depends on your industry, your growth stage, and whether you need hyper-local coverage, national reach, or both. But the evaluation criteria stay the same no matter who you’re talking to: real relationships, senior-level work, a genuine understanding of your industry, and results you can actually verify.
If you’re evaluating PR agencies in Austin right now, ask the five questions above before you sign anything. The answers will tell you more than any homepage or awards badge ever could.
